Randy Schild awarded Educator of the Year

April 26, 2017

Tuesday, Northwest Nazarene University honored Randy Schild with the 2017 L.E. Wesche Outstanding Educator of the Year award. The award is given each year to an alumnus who has provided distinguished service in the field of education.

A native of Tillamook, Oregon, Schild has served as superintendent for the Tillamook School District since 2001. Prior to serving as superintendent, Schild was a business teacher, dean of students, and head baseball coach at Tillamook High School for 13 years. As an administrator, he also served in Tillamook County as a high school vice principal and principal. Schild obtained two degrees from NNU, first business administration in 1982 and then physical education in 1983. He earned his master’s degree from Portland State University in 1994, and his administrative leadership credentials from Portland State University in 1996.

In 2015, Schild was named Oregon Superintendent of the Year. His accomplishments while serving as superintendent have included focusing the district on the importance of all-day kindergarten with a Jump-Start program to help high-needs students catch up on basic skills prior to the school year starting. As a result of this focus, students’ ability to read at the first-grade level after kindergarten rose from 15 percent to 55 percent, and economically disadvantaged students able to read at grade level rose from 37 percent to 82 percent in only two years. He has created increased diversity awareness among educators and the public by establishing a Latino family liaison, a Latino focus group, and Latino leadership. Under Schild’s leadership, the district has re-evaluated and changed the educator evaluation system throughout the district to improve teacher and administrative effectiveness. The change included implementing a teacher mentor program and a new teacher incentive program.

Schild’s other accolades include being honored as the 1994 Oregon High School Baseball Coach of the Year and being inducted into the Oregon Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2002. In 2001, Schild was named the Tillamook County Educator of the Year, and, in 2003, he received the Northwest Regional Education Service District Partners in Education Award.

Throughout his educational career, Schild has acted as a board and committee member on numerous local and state boards and has served an unprecedented three terms as the superintendent advisor to the State Board of Education. He served as the president of the Oregon High School Baseball Coaches Association for five years and has been the play-by-play announcer for Tillamook high school sports for the last 30 years. Schild has also been a member of the Tillamook County Commission on Children and Families and is an active member of the Tillamook Church of the Nazarene.

The Wesche Award is named in honor of Dr. Lilburn Wesche, NNU faculty emeritus, who graduated from Northwest Nazarene College in 1951. During his 30-year career at NNU, he was a professor, head of the education department, director of teacher education, director of graduate studies, interim academic dean and chair of the division of professional studies. Award recipients are current professionals who make a positive impact in the field of education that extends beyond the classroom.
